Operators publish hard limits because insurers make them. Most canyons want you swimming and over twelve; zip lines and bungee run both a floor and a ceiling on weight; rafting grades rise and fall with the river and a canyon shuts outright after heavy rain. Read the limits before the price, and book the wet-weather kinds early in the day.

Queenstown put commercial bungee on the map and then kept going. The Shotover runs through a schist gorge barely wider than the boat, which is why the jet drivers can hold full throttle a metre off the rock and finish on a 360 spin. Everything launches within twenty minutes of the town centre, so two or three of these fit into one day if your stomach agrees.

The Madeira levadas and ravines
Rain falls on the north of the island almost all year and leaves it dripping, so the ravines above Funchal and Sao Vicente run with water when southern Europe has dried out. Descents are graded one to four, level one needs no rope skill at all, and the wetsuits are thick because the pools sit in permanent shade under laurel canopy.

The Cetina river below Omis
The Cetina drops out of the Dinaric karst and reaches the Adriatic through a gorge at Omis, which is why one short river carries rafting, canyoning, zip lines and cliff jumps within a few kilometres of each other.
